Charging technology for electric and hybrid vehicles

Smart charge controllers for charging station/wallbox AC charging (mode 3) – „Build your own charging station“

Safe and intelligent charging of electric vehicles

AC charging stations can often be found at home, in hotels, public parking areas or at the workplace. A great advantage of AC charging is that the conventional 230 V/400 V AC power supply can be used and the charging infrastructure can be connected by an electrician.

Smart charge controllers

The choice of the charge controller is a fundamental decision, as it is the heart of every charging station and thus has a significant influence on its function. With the intelligent charge controllers CC613 and CC612, Bender provides the basis for an AC charging station or wallbox that stands out for innovation, economic efficiency und safety. Our customers can set up their own charging infrastructure solutions and create new business models without the need for expensive and time-consuming development – Bender paves the way for electric mobility.

Through many years of experience in the field of electrical safety and the flexibility of a start-up as well as established partnerships with manufacturers of charging infrastructure, Bender continues to develop its charge controllers and their software. The aim is always to provide solutions that meet the requirements of the final application today and in the future to a high degree, taking into account normative and legal changes.

Future-proof charging infrastructure

Free software updates (typ. on a quarterly basis) guarantee that charging systems are up to date and thus take into account dynamic market developments. By supporting the OCPP1.5 and OCPP1.6 protocols and including GSM, Ethernet and Wi-Fi interfaces, the controllers can be easily connected to backend systems and remotely updated and managed. Online service to identify errors is just as possible as local administration on site via USB interfaces. Updates and configuration settings can also be imported and duplicated via a service USB stick.

The integrated PLC communication in accordance with ISO15118 for implementation of plug & charge, bi-directional communication with the vehicle as well as intelligent connection to energy management systems (EMS) are further innovative components of the charge controller, which already meets future requirements.

Billing options in compliance with German calibration law

The technical basis for billing in compliance with German calibration law is provided by the combination of the CC612 charge controller with the energy meter developed by EMH and the transparency software. The manufacturer-independent transparency software solution allows kWh-accurate billing of electricity for technical operators of charging infrastructure (CPO), backend operators and end customers. The CPO is not forced to commit to a proprietary solution or a predetermined combination of charging point hardware and backend. Billing in compliance with German calibration law is not only legally required for public spaces, but also for the charging of company vehicles at the private house connection in case of subsequent billing with the employer.

Dynamic load management (DLM)

Intelligent distribution of the energy provided by the grid and ensuring a stable electricity grid are further challenges for operators of charging infrastructures that are becoming increasingly important. A specially developed dynamic load management (eDLM software) integrated in the controller enables load management with up to 250 charging points within a local eDLM system. The entire available energy is distributed in a highly dynamic and effective way using different profiles. The Bender charge controller contains the continuously enhanced eDLM software, which is compatible with charging points of all manufacturers who also rely on Bender technology. Therefore, charging parks can be easily expanded by their operators. In addition, it is possible to combine different models with each other.

Economic efficiency, availability and safety combined

Compact design and a high level of intelligence in a minimum of space form a complete system that reduces the number of additional components required and thus guarantees competitiveness.

Integrated, patented, electronic DC fault current monitoring makes a more expensive type B RCD unnecessary. The combination of electronic DC fault monitoring and a type A RCD meets all normative requirements for protection against fault currents. Furthermore, this innovative technology guarantees maximum safety and availability for both the charging system and the vehicle to be charged, since the controller does not only react to critical DC fault currents. Instead, even small residual currents, which indicate deterioration, are detected at an early stage, reported and the charging process is deliberately terminated before the RCD is tripped.

The charge controllers fit into a cost-effective and application-oriented comprehensive solution without or with a significantly reduced need for service technicians, for example for manually restarting the RCDs that would otherwise have been tripped.

During the charging process, vehicle owners can also be provided with specific information from the continuous monitoring of AC and DC fault currents during various charging cycles. This information enables the vehicle owner to detect faults at an early stage.

In addition, the charge controllers provide monitoring of the internal hardware and temperature control via sensors, which regulate the charging power in case of overheating and thus prevent the charging system from failing.

Through continuous development, the charge controllers offer a combination of safety, economic efficiency and innovative technology for future challenges.
